There goes the neighbourhood, as a song went. In some of these articles I moan, politely though profusely, about living (relatively speaking) out in the sticks, where opportunities are only starting to improve for culture, consumption, or beer-drinking.
As for that last point, Beer & Cakes, which opened in late 2016, is something that I craved for years – a watering hole within walking distance and with a decent selection of beer on tap. Suitably enough, it’s also not far from a sculpture known locally as “monument to the liver“.
Beer & Cakes replaced a local pizzeria, and pizza and burgers are still prepared here, as are, true to advertising, cakes. Just as the beer is of craft variety (experimental flavours, small breweries which sometimes present their fare to the locals), so are the cakes – some come enhanced with chili peppers or barley-wine dressing.
Despite its remote location, Beer & Cakes is often lively though I suspect few people actually make the journey from the centre, which means we locals are as decent as I suspect we are. Whether you’re in for a quick pint or a late-night meal, come join us.
