“Na Mohovoy” is well-known by the audience of St. Petersburg. This is the theatre where students of the St. Petersburg Theater Academy (RGISI nowdays) show the productions they have made in the process of learning. The repertoire of the theater includes musicals, drama, comedies… Every performance is very different, because they are done by different student groups, under the guidance of different teachers.
Modern theater, experiments and performances is what I especially like. Big or state theatre usually can’t afford bold experiments. In contrast, student productions are always bolder, often more fun & more interesting. This is a discovery process.
There is one more reason I recommend visiting this place. The theater is located in a historical building from the beginning of the 20th century. The theater hall was once an audience room for students of the Tenishev College. It has a semicircular shape and the seats are located in an amphitheater. The hall has excellent acoustics, thanks to the idea of the architect.
I studied as a director, so for me watching student plays is a special pleasure. I love going to the test performances in December and May-June. This is when the play is shown for the first time (premiere) and the teachers who take the exam sit in the first row. There’s a special atmosphere in the hall. Friends and relatives come to support the students. Such shows are always emotional and memorable. If you are lucky to get to the test show, you will not regret it.
