Recently my friends and I get together again to have traditional weekend workout in Sosnovka park and I thought that this place could be interesting despite the location. Obviously, it’s not in the historic centre, however Sosnovka is one of the biggest forest parks in the city, a true green oasis in the urban area.
In the XIX century Sosnovka was the duel place for locals. For instance, Mikhail Lermontov, one of the greatest Russian poets, fought a duel with the son of the French embassador there. Nobody was hurt, however Lermontov was deported to Caucasus after this episode as a punishment, where he was killed.. during another duel. O tempora! O mores!
Locals love Sosnovka. Sporty people, parents with children, dog owners, students from horse-riding school, chess players and nature lovers enjoy walking, running and having fun there. Do not be confused by the sound of shots fired, there is a big shooting range where locals practice their sharpshooting skills.
In fact, the park covers a large territory. It can be divided into a civilised area and the wild forest and it is better not to visit the forest area during the dark for security reasons. There are bugs and problems with navigation systems, so Google won’t help you. The civilised territory is framed by Svetlanovskyi and Morisa Toreza prospects.
To reach Sosnovka you can take Udelnaya or Politechnicheskaya metro stations and walk for 15 minutes. Breathe in!
