The 16th Avenue Tiled Steps in San Francisco are a hidden gem in the city that not many people know about. The steps are located in the residential streets of the Sunset District and the sea-to-stars themed mosaic on the tiles were created in 2003 by two neighborhood residents as a way to unite their community and beautify the environment. Residents in the neighborhood sponsored tiles featuring animals, fish, and shells and they learned how to make the tiles themselves and contribute to the project.
There are 163 steps total which makes it a really good workout and a chance to be a little bit closer to nature and peace and quiet in such a busy and crowded city. I got my heart pumping and warmed my body up by walking quickly up the stairs and further on up another flight of stairs to a small park where on a clear day (make sure it’s not foggy!) you can see beautiful views of the city. Of course, you should take some time to admire the art on the titles as you climb. The 16th Avenue Tiled Steps is such a wonderful urban escape in San Francisco for some art gazing and exercise!
