Caffè Macaroni is the type of known-by-locals restaurant that I always seek out whether I’m in San Francisco or another country. Located in a section of North Beach that is less populated with tourists and more with local workers, Caffè Macaroni is a favorite of mine as well as many other regulars. The owner Mario, from Naples, and his wife Stephanie warmly greet my boyfriend and me and we quickly fall into conversation about what’s been going on in each of our lives and what our current travel plans are.
Outside there are a handful of small tables, perfect for people-watching. The cozy interior of Caffè Macaroni has red painted walls and vinyl banquettes, antique mirrors and Italian collectibles in every corner. I’m immediately transported to Italy when I step inside. What could be better than that? To me…nothing! Upstairs there’s a charming dining room with a peekaboo view of the street below.
One of the things I love most about Caffè Macaroni is that in addition to the wonderful Neapolitan food on the menu, I can also ask for something to be made just for me. For example, one my favorite pasta dishes is capellini with tomatoes and basil. If I don’t see it on Caffè Macaroni’s menu that day, Mario will make it for me. And, the menu changes daily so locals can always try something they haven’t had before!
Dovete provarlo! You’ve got to try it!
