I recently started eating vegetarian and oftentimes vegan, so when I discovered Gracias Madre in the same block as one of my other favorite spots, Jaime’s Jewelry (check the Jaime’s Jewelry article), I really wanted to try it as soon as possible. Gracias Madre is an organic, plant-based Mexican restaurant located in a fairly gritty part of the Mission and trust me, it’s worth it!
So let me tell you about the El Platillo I ordered. I think “el platillo” means “the dish” in Spanish and it certainly was! What was set in front of me was a dish full of butternut squash, kale with pumpkin seeds, black beans, rice, pico de gallo and a cilantro pesto, served with fresh tortillas. The flavors of everything were so incredible I couldn’t stop saying “this is so good, this is so good!” My boyfriend, who is not vegan or vegetarian, was completely satiated with his Quesadillas Calabaza and also remarked on the freshness and fantastic flavor of everything.
On this particular day, we enjoyed our Gracias Madre lunch inside at the bar but there is an outside patio with really high-functioning heaters so even on a cold day it would be comfortable dining al fresco.
I’m already planning my next visit to Gracias Madre and I’ve scoped out the menu for what I want to order! Will it be the Pozole or the Flautas de Camote?
