Bernal Heights is definitely not a tourist’s neighborhood- there are no sights to see or iconic parks, but the locals pack the restaurants and there are a number of great finds here.
My personal favorite is Holy Water, a spacious neighborhood bar with a great cocktail list, a locals’ vibe and warm ambiance. Besides the name, I love the fact that I can go there pretty much any time of day and find a few people inside- and even when it’s emptier it still feels inviting. During the weekends they also usually have a food pop-up inside that changes frequently; the last time I was there the pop-up owners were selling pretzels and German bratwurst. They’ve also got an “11th hour” special: after 11 pm they start serving specials that aren’t on the menu and are always changing depending on what they’ve got available. It’s a good excuse to stay late.
To ease my Sunday Scaries and get a jump on the work week I’ve also gone there a few times with a friend and my laptop. We usually snag a nice high-top in the back, have a glass or two of wine and enjoy a nice wind-down to the weekend.
