When I was a kid, the rooftop Winter Wonderland at Emporium-Capwell was THE place to be! You got Santa, Elves, reindeer, rides and fake snow! It was even better than FAO Schwarz, the up-scale toy store up the block. As an adult, I try to avoid downtown San Francisco and Union Square during the shopping season. The anti-fur protests in front of Neiman-Marcus don’t have the same holiday spirit.
Twenty-nine years ago, Macy’s started a tradition with the SF/SPCA (San Francisco Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). The Pet Adoption Display Windows is the best thing in the City during the holidays. Volunteer shift slots go fast for this event! Over the last few years, the organization set fundraising records to help care for all animals that need help, including those rescued during the seasonal wildfires.
The adorable dogs, cats, bunnies and guinea pigs are on display and available starting November 18th. They will be up for adoption through January, 2020. Standing in the cold watching puppies play and bunnies hop will warm one’s heart really quickly.
