One of my favorite things about the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial is the sound of the cascading water as I walk along the pathway behind it. Coming from a reflecting pool above, the sound of the powerful waterfall blocks out surrounding city noise and is the perfect spot to both learn more about Martin Luther King Jr. and reflect upon his words. The big green lawn in front of the memorial is a perfect place for a picnic and on occasion, to enjoy live music.
The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial is also a spot at which I like to practice my photography: shooting through the walls of water, composing images down the pathway or maybe focusing on one of MLK’s quotations, many of which are translated into different languages.
This special memorial pushes me to contemplate civil rights and humanity: where we’ve been, where we are and how far we still have to go. The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial is peaceful, poignant and thought-provoking.
