Slate Bar – Don’t drop the mic

I stumbled on this place during CAAMFest, the annual film, music and food festival put on by the Center for Asian American Media. That night was full of fun and new music by unknown young artists. I had doubts about a hipster dive bar in the techie drenched Mission District but this place is pretty cool.

Slate Bar is a one of dozens, maybe hundreds, of dive bars in the Mission. It’s a new addition to 16th Street. The bar really stands out. If it were a person, it would be that crazy friend who always talks you into going out when you don’t want to and you never regret it.

Live Trivia Wednesdays and Dance Karaoke Thursdays are two regular weekly events to get you out on a school night. Weekends vary including theme nights, like British Indie Pop, and local DJs. There are some serious “Soul Funky” vibrations this season.

It’s a nice sized space with a good dance floor and limited loungey seating. If you prefer to sit at the bar, the bartenders are very cool and interesting. There’s a nice long happy hour from 17:00 – 21:00.

If you’re karaoke-shy, just learn to the words to any song by Journey. Don’t stop believing!
