This community board was dubbed the “world’s biggest fortune cookie” by Herb Caen, the San Francisco journalist credited with coining the term “beatnik”. This sign has been around since the 1950’s. It’s really linked to the tire shop. Bill Brinnon is the third person ever charged with the task of maintaining the sign.
I’ve seen everyone from Gore Vidal to David Bowie to Camille Claudel quoted here. The quotes make you think, make you smile, make you angry and, sometimes, they are just confusing.
Who submits the quotes? Everyone…but mostly Bill. The tire shop receives suggestions all the time but Bill has final say and a significant stack of his own quotes to put up.
The building is a protected historic landmark but the sign isn’t. It may be gone someday. So far, there is no heir to take over when Bill retires. But, until then, you can see a cool surprise on the corner of Turk and Larkin. The sign changes every few weeks.
