”Avlija” is one of the cutest places in Sarajevo. It’s located a bit uphill and it’s a wonderful reason to explore the streets in Sarajevo. 

Since ”Avlija” is a bit uphill, it’s not one of my spontaneous places. But it’s definitely great and whenever I go there, I make sure my time is well spent – with an abundance of great food shared with a bunch of friends. What they offer are some traditional dishes with modern ones. I like their traditional ”klepe”, which is something similar to ravioli, in the shape of triangle, filled with meat, spinach and/or cheese with cream on top and a bit of garlic. Also, in Avlija you’ll find great meat and cheese platters, chicken dishes and steaks. The prices are very reasonable – 3 course dinner would cost you around € 10 which combined with an easygoing atmosphere makes this place even more unique. 

The name itself in Bosnian means courtyard – a name which fits the atmosphere. At the very entrance, you will be welcomed by the green, wooden door, as if you are about to enter someone’s house in the countryside. Once you are in, it’s like you are sitting in a plant-lover’s courtyard. The whole décor is welcoming, warm and charming.

Avlija is definitely my recommendation for good food and ambience. It’s not open on Sundays, but if you happen to be in Sarajevo on any other day, mingle with the locals here as you would with friends in their garden at home.
