I’m sure that passing by this building you would’ve never guessed that it’s a place where all the best local cheese and smoked meat is presented and sold. There is an open (green) market) and a closed market, close to each other under the same name, Markale. This one is the closed one, named Markthalle in German and it is located in a beautiful neo-Renaissance style building.
To be honest, inside it’s not as representative as it looks on the outside, but you will not mind when you see what hides in there. If you want to be prepared for the perfect picnic in Sarajevo, you’ll definitely want to buy some of the products here. Now, my favourite thing is definitely cheese and I have the perfect place to recommend you: Ms. Mirsada Pjano’s cheese. This lady has her own pastures near Sarajevo and my family has a long tradition of buying cheese from them – my grandmother started, then my mother and aunts and finally I’ve continued that tradition, passing it to my friends. Everything is fresh and here you’ll find light cheeses, as well as smoked ones, and lately they’ve been experimenting with some cool variations of light cheese with herbs. You will find Ms. Pjano’s cheese sold in the first cheese box from the main entrance to the left.
Pjano’s cheese on a warm bagel and some finely sliced smoked meat, eaten under the tree shade is enough to brighten your day in Sarajevo. Trust me :).
