There is a simple way to discover the truth behind a new city and about its people – if you can just find the right green market there. That’s something I discovered during my travels; the vibrant atmosphere of green markets, full of cool colors and stocked with some fresh products sold by local farmers can tell you a lot about the city and about what makes its people happy.

Sarajevo is in a center of a very rich agricultural area with great local products of which production is expanding as you’re reading this. The time came when people are returning to their land, either as main work, or as a hobby, often by planting small vegetables and herbs on their balconies. I love that vibe of colorful picturesqueness of the green markets. I usually swing by during my lunch break, especially in summer, because I just cannot resist wild berries and that walk along the rows in pursuit of happiness which good food brings.

I’m aware that it’s unlikely that you’ll be cooking a lot on your trip, but you’ll appreciate this tip, which will get you sidetracked from the main street into the parallel one and into a parallel world of its own.

Remember this: ”Koliko koshta” is the perfect way to try to blend in by saying: ”How much is it?” It will give you some kind of belief that you are doing something locals do on a daily basis and it’s so much fun. Enjoy!
