One of the things I love about Seattle is being surrounded by water: set in the Puget Sound, leading through the Ballard Locks to Lake Union and via Portage and Union Bays to gigantic Lake Washington. When the weather is nice – pretty much guaranteed during summer – there’s nothing better than hitting the road towards Agua Verde Café and Paddle Club to rent kayaks or paddle boards and go check out those house boats (including Tom Hank’s floating home in Sleepless in Seattle) on Lake Union from the water side.
Agua Verde is situated on Boat street (cute, right?) in Portage Bay, offering easy access to both Lake Union to your right and Lake Washington to your left. You can rent a single or double kayak or a paddleboard and take it out for as long as you want – they don’t charge you until you’re back, so you don’t have to worry about making any certain deadline. Safety vests and waterproof pouches for your phone and other water-sensitive items is included, and lockers are available for those things you don’t want to bring along. Remember to bring ID and maybe a water bottle and some snacks. There is parking on site for a fee and street parking in the surroundings.
After an hour or two on the water, check out Agua Verde’s café on top of the paddle rental for some delicious and inexpensive Mexican food and drinks. What a perfect way to spend a sunny afternoon in Seattle!
