The non-descriptive front of Sue Bar blends in with many of other small grungy neighboring bars. Don’t be fooled by this hidden gem: once inside this modern “southern” bar, you’re in for a treat whether that is their in-house infused drinks or a special cocktail. Things get a little creative with their Pondwater cocktail. Let’s just say it involves earl grey infused bourbon! Did I say bourbon? They love their whiskeys here!
The menu and the decor are slightly more sophisticated than what you’d expect for a dive bar. Keeping things fun and quirky while sticking with the southern theme, they boldly state that they prepare all food with bacon grease. There’s always a cult classic movie playing on silent and when there isn’t they have local DJs spinning. If I didn’t wake up for work, I’d be getting down at Motown Mondays for some funk.
Sue Bar managed to find the perfect mix of sophistication and fun to keep things casual and a bit hip. Its hidden factor lends to a less crowded and more down tempo feel than most of Capitol Hill’s bars. I like taking friends here because you don’t have to worry about finding a seat, people don’t take themselves too seriously and drinks are good and inexpensive.
