Frankie & Jo’s – Vegan ice cream!

Vegan is the new black in Seattle. Luckily, you don’t have to go without ice cream – my favorite treat (see my article on Molly Moon’s) – if your diet is plant-based. But even for non-vegans, Frankie & Jo’s ice cream shop is definitely worth a visit.
With more than ten daily flavors to choose from, the ice cream comes in delicious and inventive combinations, like the seasonal ‘pink cloud’ (inspired by a local vegan moisture cream (!)) made with white tea coconut, cashew milk and pink vegan meringue spiced with cardamom, rose petals & vanilla, or try the graphite-colored ‘salty caramel ash’ with activated charcoal. The ice cream is so creamy and full-bodied, you would NEVER guess it has no diary in it! And some of the flavors have the most amazing colors.
Frankie & Jo’s keep their ingredient list short to bring out their natural flavors, and do not add any gums or other stabilizers. The nut milk you’ll find in some of the recipes is made in their kitchen from sprouted nuts and filtered water a day or two before making the base, and the ice cream is churned immediately thereafter, so it’s super-fresh.
Their ice cream is gluten-free, including the yummy crunchy, snappy and chewy bits in the ice cream and the waffle cones. They have two shops in Seattle, the one I visited in Ballard, and their flagship on Capitol Hill. The Ballard location has a cute covered succulent backyard where you can sit and enjoy your ice cream.
