I confess to being a “bridge person,” and I’d be hard-pressed to meet a bridge I didn’t love, but I have to say: Fremont Bridge is one of my favorites.
The two best things about this bridge are its fantastic color – “Tardis Blue” if you’re a Doctor Who fan – and its accessibility to foot traffic. The bridge extends easily out of a busy Fremont intersection and across the Lake Washington Ship Canal. On many days I’ve been out running errands to the grocery or music shop down the street when the bridge catches my eye. It looks so inviting that I just have to get across the street and walk across the bridge.
It’s not the neon Rapunzel hanging out in the window of one of the “police box” style control towers, it’s the color. That blue, blue bridge! And it’s so close …. In three or four minutes I can be standing on it, only 30 feet above the ground, but with a good enough view of the canal and surrounding streets to make me feel on top of the world.
