Ballard has numerous good spots for food and coffee. Recently, I found a new favorite for that java craving: Java Bean Organic Coffee House on 24th Ave NW.
After taking a stroll by the locks (see my article on the Ballard Locks) and working up an appetite for a hot espresso drink and maybe some food, Java Bean is your go-to. Dating back to 1989, it’s one of the oldest coffee houses in town. Recently, it has found new owners that are taking the award-winning community coffee spot to new levels.
Maria Beck’s vision for her coffee house is to focus on organic and high-quality items, based on fair trade and ethical values. She worked with a local coffee roaster for three months to craft her own, smooth coffee blend with strict standards for the origin and roasting style. The result is a very smooth and rich coffee without the burnt bitterness you’ll find in coffee from some of the large chains.
Before moving to Seattle, Maria spent several years in Denmark, and she’s bringing some of that renowned Danish hygge to her coffee shop. The décor is relaxed, whimsical and very inviting. Get yourself comfortable in the sofa with a signature drink like the Café København, the house-made chai, or the delicious rich ‘Café Molé’ hot chocolate infused with vanilla, cinnamon, and steamed creamy milk. Try one of the homemade ‘laks’ bagels or the signature eggel breakfast sandwich. And bring along the kiddos for a 1$ drink.
