I always bring my running shoes when I’m traveling – I get to see so much more of the city I’m visiting, and I much prefer to run outside than on some hotel’s treadmill. But it can be intimidating to set out in an unknown city, especially one that is as hilly as Seattle! The easy fix: find a local running club and go run with them; they’ll know the best routes, take you places that you wouldn’t otherwise see, and it’s free!
The best running group in town is the Seattle Green Lake Running Group, or SGLRG. Named after Green Lake, one of the most popular destinations for urban running in Seattle, a small group of runners started meeting there on a cold Saturday winter morning in January 2010. It has grown a lot since, and was voted the best running group in the NW region by Competitor Magazine a few years back.
SGLRG hosts several different runs from various locations every day of the week, from early mornings to late afternoons, and there is someone to run with at every pace, fast or less so. I’ve run with visitors from all over the world who have joined our group for a run or two while in town, but it’s just as great for newcomers to Seattle for making local friends and getting to know your way around your new city. So, check out the different options on the meet up site, lace up, and come run with us!
