There are free tours in most capitals around the world. Free Sofia Tour is among the best. That’s not just me saying it, it’s 5.000 people on TripAdvisor and nearly 400.000 people who took part since 2010. It’s run by an independent non-profit organization that brings together amazing locals who want to show you the best of the city. Historians, entrepreneurs, actors, there are all kinds of great people on the team.

Some readers would say “Yeah, but that’s not a spot!“. Trust me, it is. It’s been the same spot for 13 years now. Palace of Justice, next to the lion on the corner. Rain or shine, tour guides are there, you just have to show up. I know, as I was one of the founders and I still remember the few days in the beginning when nobody would come. We did a tour even if only 1 person showed up. I am no longer involved but I am happy that they managed to prevail. They even did tours during COVID-19 times with some weird masks (see photo). Actually, during a couple of months in 2020 was the only time when tours did not run because of the restrictions. Other than that, there’s been a tour (and tourists) every single day.

You probably know the drill – 2 hours of fun, useful information and you get to meet a nice local and some like-minded foreigners. If you like it, you can always donate to the development of the project or join some of the paid activities.
