I love visiting art galleries in Tallinn’s old town. The galleries are mostly free of charge and have always something new to offer. Draakoni galerii, Hobusepea galerii, Hop galerii, A-galerii – this is the vortex I frequently get sucked into.
Out of all those galleries, A-galerii has an easter egg for you to discover. From outside you might think it is a place to shop designer jewelry, which it also is, but inside you can also find a 5.2 m² vault room that has hosted designer jewelry exhibitions since 2005.
Before housing A-galerii, the building was connected to Joseph Kopf’s gold and jewelry business. Joseph Kopf (1867-1930) was a goldsmith and the origin of the vault dates all the way back to his days. Even if you don’t plan on buying any jewelry, the vault is an interesting hidden feature to check out. Speaking from experience: the massive door and bolted walls might make you want to rewatch Panic Room.
