This is my personal favorite pub in the whole of Tallinn. It was voted as the best pub by other people and organizations in 2011, 2012, 2013 and still is the best pub in 2014. Yes, that’s 4 years in a row.
It is situated in the heart of Old Town, in the basement right next to Niguliste Church. You can spot it by the barrel hanging from the wall. You go down a steep staircase, open a heavy door and you are there, in Põrgu. The name “Põrgu” stands for Hell in Estonian. The interior is minimalist with iron chairs. It has two rooms, one with white walls and a red room.
But the great thing about the place is the food and beer. They serve delicious a la carte dishes. Nothing close to regular pub food. Great chicken, pork and beef. My favorites are fish soup, risotto with grilled vegetables and a magic chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream for dessert. And if you are traveling for no apparent reason with a minimum of 12 people, ask for a special pre-ordered group menu.
Põrgu has a very wide selection of excellent beers. Do not miss Põrgu’s own brewed dark beer on tap and the new Estonian microbrewery Õllenaut, Lehe, Tanker etc. The anchovy sandwiches and sprats with a picante lemon twist make a great snack.
I highly recommend this place to people who can appreciate excellent beer and food.
