The first fish market in Finland was organized in Tampere in 1991. These markets have remained popular and are organized twice a year at Laukontori in Tampere. When the market is on, almost the whole center smells like fish, and people from Tampere and from towns nearby fill the entire Laukontori.
Even though the market is relatively small, it is crowded with people and everyone is in a good mood and no one is in a hurry. Of course, there are other delicacies like Italian olives, various sea buckthorn products and other foods besides delicacies and handicrafts.
The best part of the market day will be the creamy salmon soup at Suvilaiva. This belongs to my own tradition. And I will continue it as long as I can. The fish market is the first or last day of summer for me. If you’re not a fan of fish I wouldn’t come here, because you will smell like a smoked salmon after this market day!
Dates for 2020 fish market are 24-26.4.2020
