If you’re a friend of sustainable fashion who loves design, head to PIHKA store in the old factory area of Kehräsaari. PIHKA designs and manufactures bags and shoes from naturally breathing, durable leather. They sell bags, belts and jewellery that every stylish person would be happy to wear. The bags are quite pricy, but many view them as a long-time investment in quality and style.
I don’t yet own any of their bags (would love to), but I have several of PIHKA’s iconic bird-shaped leather earrings. The earrings and other small accessories are made from leather leftovers. All manufacturing and design of PIHKA products is done in Finland – for the most part in their workshop located in the Kehräsaari, where the store is located. So it is one of those few truly local design brands.
This is not only a shop, but also a workshop where you can make your own clutch bag or smaller leather accessories guided by PIHKA’s designers. The workshops require enrolment and they’re usually full. Check out the website for information on dates and prices.
Tampere is famous for its unique design community, and local design brands are well-known in Finland. So if you want to own or give someone a souvenir of a piece of Finnish design made by yourself, this is the place.
