Shavteli Street 13 is a very lovely place in the Old Town. There you will find the Marionette Theater, the Clock Tower and the Gabriadze Art Cafe.
Rezo Gabriadze is a well-known Georgian screenwriter, film and stage director, sculptor and puppeteer. Founded in 1981, the marionette theater belongs to the favorite places of locals or foreign guest to this day, because with English subtitles it is understandable by all. From the actual performances, I can recommend you my favorite two: “Diamond of Marshal de Fant’e” and “The Autumn Of My Springtime”.
7 years after the theater was founded, next to it appeared a cozy art cafe that was originally called “Ar daidardo!”, which means “Don’t grieve!” or “Sans Souci!” The founder’s idea was to open an art cafe “not so that people could eat, but so that one single coffee bean could be fried all day long, filling the theater with its aroma.”
The cafe’s interior was entirely created by Rezo Gabriadze in puppet theater style. All the furniture was also hand-painted by him with scenes and phrases from his films and plays. The cafe is like a theater backdrop. Before or after the theater performance, you should try the best apple pie with Georgian tea or homemade lemonade.
In 2010, between the theater and the cafe, there appeared a unique clock tower. Every hour, an angel comes out with a small hammer to ring the bell, and twice a day, at 12:00 and at 19:00, you can see a show – “The Circle of Life”.
