It’s the mega-multiplex cinemas era of Hollywood blockbusters nowadays around the world and Israel is no exception, however if you are fond of documentaries, retrospectives, independent and festival movies like I am, you can find it all at Cinematheque Tel Aviv.
The audience here is quite a mix – elderly, hipsters, cinema critics, film students and just lovers of fine cinematography. Cinematheque Tel Aviv has 5 cinema halls and a movie library. Hall #5 is my favorite, it’s very small, about 50 seats only. Very controversial documentaries are usually scheduled in this hall.
Different festivals held at the cinematheque include LGBT, documentary, animation, children’s films and many others. Most of the screenings are in English or have English subtitles, just ask at the ticket office. Directors and casts enrich some of the premiere screenings with their presence, so you have a unique opportunity to hear their stories behind the film firsthand.
Insider’s tip – Every Sunday you can get a ticket at half price. Save 3 ILS by booking your ticket online.
