Mercato has a few branches around the city, but the best one is in the neighborhood I live in, right on Basel Square in the Old North.
It is a delicatessen that offers various kinds of cheese from local Israeli farms as well as from France, Spain and the Netherlands, different cold cuts, fresh meat and delicious organic eggs.
Other than that, you can find fresh bread, spelt pittas which became a huge trend in Tel Aviv during the past couple of years, cookies, special pastas, sauces, wine and more.
Mercato sells superior brands that are mostly imported and suit the Israeli palate. Normally you will find only people from the neighborhood buying goodies, and on Thursday evenings and Fridays there are long lines, as there is only one cashier.
I enjoy buying many different kinds of cheese and wine for when I have guests since they are not that expensive in comparison to other options in the area. When you go there you feel like you are indulging yourself on special products and the value is definitely worth the money!
