The area around Carmel Market is overcrowded with Telavivans, peripheral visitors and tourists but it still manages to have some spots nearby that are semi-secret and semi-overlooked. Salon Berlin is one of those bars where a lot of things have happened to me which couldn’t happen in any other place:
– I met a friend of mine here after a long time of not seeing each other and we booked a flight together while sitting at the bar
– I let two Irish tourist girls paint on my face
– I had some meaningful dates here and really deep talks with my close friends
Somehow when I come here they always have happy hour – or 1+1, or beer and chaser or just cheap booze. Salon Berlin hosts mostly hipsters and Yemenite quarter residents. The alcohol prices are magnificently cheaper than in any other bars, that’s why they proudly earned the title “cheap as in Berlin”. My beer of choice – Bazelet Amber Ale.
P.S. Recently I discovered the totally new Friday Afternoon Salon Berlin vibe. It looks like “old foxes” gather here to maintain their ability to have fun along with youngster calling in. Around 14:00 or so, the live music kicks off and a gentleman in his 70s with grey hair and dressed in his finest starts singing Greek music. Since we have a lot of Israeli songs translated from Greek it sounds like this – he sings in Greek and the bar visitor sings along in Hebrew at the same time. Yammas and LeChaim!
