YA-PAN (the Hebrew pronunciation of the word “Japan”) is the second place that was opened in Tel Aviv by the chef Yuval Ben Nerria. The first place, an Asian restaurant called “Taizu”, is my favorite restaurant, and I would have written about it if it wasn’t the most recommended restaurant in every list or guide 🙂
That’s why I was so excited when “YAPAN” was opened. It’s located right in the city center and it’s more of a bar-with-really-good-food than a restaurant (they call it a bistro). What a perfect way to finish your day! The place has a huge bar and it was really nice to sit there and interact with the bartender and get a view to the weird-but-great wall with lots of mini mirrors (I said it’s weird…)
I started with a cocktail (like every night should start) and only then asked for the food menu. The menu is almost entirely based on fish – that I don’t eat – but my friend said that they were amazing: fresh, with gentle but interesting flavors. I had the curry tofu that was really really good! And immediately afterwards we ordered more cocktails. All in all – not a bad evening 🙂
I really liked that the atmosphere was very elegant but the food was quite light, with small plates. Central location too. It makes it a really good choice for a nice sunset dinner.
