Bij Clarence is probably one of the most loved breakfast and lunch cafés in my neighborhood. I literally always run into someone I know when having a coffee here. Clarence, the owner, is a well-known figure in The Hague. He has Indonesian roots, which shows in the menu. On the lunch menu you can find modern versions of classic Indonesian dishes, like Soto Ajam, an Asian chicken soup. Nothing beats a gloomy mood on a cloudy day like this soup!

Apart from this little Asian twist, Clarence offers traditional breakfast and lunch dishes, mouthwatering cakes and excellent coffee and tea. I love the lemon-poppy seed cake and chai latte! What’s more: Clarence has good wifi, so it’s a fantastic place to open your laptop and get some work done. Not to inconvenience the regular visitors, Clarence does ask people who want to work to take a seat at the window.

I love the warm atmosphere of this place and the mix of people who come here. In weekends, Bij Clarence can get rather crowded. I would recommend coming in early. Apart from a good spot for breakfast, Bij Clarence is an excellent starting point when you want to explore this neigborhood.
