Buiten in Dutch translates to outside in English and ontbijt is the term for breakfast. Buitenontbijt is thus an outdoor breakfast, invented, created and beautifully presented by Aafke Hofman, a local whose goal it was to combine both her cooking and baking skills as well as being surrounded by the beauty of nature.
She organises breakfasts every Friday, Saturday and Sunday morning between 8:30 and 11:30 at some beautiful spot in The Hague in the spring, summer and warm autumn months. You receive the exact location of the breakfast about one day beforehand—it can be the beach, woods or a park, but always in The Hague or very close by. I enjoyed one of Aafke’s Buitenontbijtes at Clingendael, a scenic park located to the east of The Hague’s city centre. Aafke and her brother designed a special wooden trailer for her bike (she delivers the breakfast by bike!) in which she stores plates, cutlery, chairs and food. I was allowed to look inside the Buitenontbijtes trailer, and to my amazement, she even had a built-in fridge.
Once you arrive at the location, you get 2 stools (Aafke designed them herself as she needed comfortable yet space-saving stools because—you guessed it—she has to be able to fit them onto her bike too) and a mouth-watering breakfast plate. You have to book in advance via her website (there’s a discount for children’s breakfasts) and can find more information there and on her Instagram page.
