Gemeentemuseum – Art for everyone

I don’t need to write this article to tell you that the Gemeentemuseum is one of the  top 3 museums to visit while in The Hague and you might also know that it has the largest Mondrian collection in the world. Right now, there are queues of visitors every day for the hugely popular Erwin Olaf exhibition, but besides the high quality exhibitions, the building itself is worth the visit alone.

This art deco building designed by H.P. Berlage is simply a joy to explore. From the glass corridor entrance to the bright multi-functional atrium, visiting the museum is truly a complete experience. Find out what is so fascinating about the figure 11 and read more about the iconic architecture and the interior here

But the Gemeentemuseum is also a favourite because I can also take my son along now and enjoy art from a different perspective. Picasso said “every child is an artist” and the Gemeentemuseum actively encourages this philosophy by opening their Kinderatelier every Sunday. Children aged 5+ are invited to come and create their own art work in the studio whilst parents can enjoy the rest of the museum. There are museum teachers to support and guide the kids and the selection of materials on offer is fantastic; paints, textiles, recycled plastics, leftover materials used in the making of the exhibition… The Kinderatelier is free for children and if you have a Museumkaart your entrance is also free, so more money to spend in the gift store!
