Walking into a shop with a wall laden with cheese, I can’t help but feel amazed. Ridders Kaashuis is much more than the usual supermarket offering of standard cheeses. This shop is for cheese connoisseurs but not exclusive, and if you are not sure what you want, you will likely find something because the selection of cheeses on offer here is huge, the staff is friendly, and you can try it before you buy!
Ridders is in the Zeeheldenkwartier, a lively neighbourhood where you can easily spend a day wandering around to browse the shops and find one-off boutiques and cafes. But back to the cheese…Just let your eyes wander over the offerings on the shelves; black lemon cheese, pesto lavender cheese, and mustard cheese. This shop is an excellent place to visit if you want a souvenir. There are gift-wrapped cheeses, and If you feel unsure what to try, don’t hesitate to ask. Owner Barry and his employees are knowledgeable and take their time to serve (many customers are regulars), which means there can be some waiting at peak times. I think that’s okay.
But wait, there is more than cheese. You can pick up tapas, cured meats, roasted nuts, chocolate and alcoholic beverages. Ridders also has a small deli counter dedicated to takeaway sandwiches or rolls, perfect for lunch. Why not wander over to the lively Prins Hendrikplein or the Palace garden for a picnic?
