Open air cinemas are as important to Greeks as feta cheese with watermelon (never tried it? You should!) or freddo espresso. They all go hand in hand with one thing: summer! There are quite a few open-air cinemas in Thessaloniki, but one of my favourites, Cine Alsos, is in Sykies. Two reasons for that.

The location is the first one. This cinema is the definition of “off-the-beaten-track”, as it is “hidden” in a vast tree-filled park, on the upper side of the city, next to Eptapyrgion. Even on the hottest summer days you will feel the breeze and the calmness only a mountainous scenery could provide. A cute little canteen adds up to the whole experience; you may buy refreshments, beers, etc and simply watch the film while sitting comfortably in your chair having your drink and enjoying a view of Mount Olympus and Katerini at the same time. Not too bad, huh?

The second reason I love this place is the wonderful movies they show. I have watched some of the most intriguing and mind-blowing films at this little cinema. Well known and new movies, plus animated films for our little ones are being shown, but if you are into independent and European film-making, then you will definitely adore this place. The staff is also super-nice and knowledgeable and would love to help you out if you have any questions.

The Sykies open air cinema will be open from 27/6 to 4/9 so hurry up and book a place!
