Central spots have a great disadvantage: they are usually packed with a generic crowd and have no personality whatsoever, just because of their position.
True? Yes, but no. Not here that is, in “Odysseia”, a hidden café/ meze spot named after the epic adventures and mischiefs of Ulysses as well as the proprietors!
Though this little place is right in the heart of the busiest part of Thessaloniki, it maintains a clearly local and relaxed character. Rita, one of the owners, is responsible for the preparation and delivery of the sublime “mezedes” landing on your table. My personal favourites are the “Russian salad”, the so-called “Olivier salad” and the lentil salad. If you prefer meat, the fried liver is a must and don’t forget to order the village sausages; you will be happily surprised. Odysseia also appreciates great beer and spirits, and you may drink endless amounts of both – ideally not simultaneously – without the lousy morning effects!
Odysseia is, as previously stated, an epic story which means it takes some time for its secrets to unfold. If you love good food, clean drinks and interesting talks, then this is the spot for you. Hurry and stress have no place in this establishment, so relax and observe the other patrons while drinking excellent tsipouro.
