My friend and I were leisurely walking along the Danforth on a hot summer day with our ice creams looking for a place to sit when we noticed a staircase on the side of the Big Carrot building, leading up to the Carrot Common Green Roof. The gate was open and the rooftop was empty; we just couldn’t resist!
Carrot Common is found on Danforth Village, minutes away from Chester subway station. There are a few local shops, an organic grocery store and health food stores around the area. Frankly, I like walking around the Danforth because it’s an area close enough to hop on the subway downtown but far enough to get away from the busy streets to a more family/community oriented neighborhood. Anyway, much like the rest of the Danforth, the Carrot Common Green Roof is a space used and built by the community for gatherings and events. They also planted herbs and other greenery to create a garden and a water feature along the center of the rooftop. There’s a barbeque and some tables and chairs to eat on for block parties or a spot for you to enjoy during your lunch breaks.
One of the many hidden rooftop oasis in the city, the Carrot Common Green Roof is open from late Spring to the end of Fall.
