Sometimes you just know. I immediately sensed that my first visit to Elvy & Flo would not be my last. It started with the intense coziness I felt walking into this coffee shop/lunch lounge on Gerrard Street East.
The overwhelming vibe was comfort – a warm welcoming, infused partly by the barn wood-styled floors and colour blocks forming a geometric mosaic on one prominent wall. The decor palette is dusty yellow, robin egg and teal blue, with dark brown accents. The long space is well lit through many west-facing windows.
I’m also a cyclist, so an invitation to keep bikes in the cafe was a major plus. In fact, the owners, Perry and Ann, are mountain bikers who regularly hit the trails when not serving cortados and non-dairy optional cappuccinos, paninis and their very popular Breakfast Sandwich. The pair’s obvious love of patrons is another reason to make this place my go-to spot for extra hot latte.
The inside space is very chill with loads of locals chatting and hanging with their tots. In the summer, a lovely patio space provides the ideal zen zone.
One tasty lunch feature is a sourdough Pinza, made with spelt, amaranth, rice and wheat flours; fermented 48 hours; and served with various toppings. A rotating soup & quiche + various sweet & savoury pastries are served daily.
Go with the Flo, indeed.
What’s spot on:
• The menu and prep are designed to deliver happy health and less food waste.
• A brownie stuffed chocolate chip cookie – yum!
