Hawker Bar – Prove you love me, buy the next round

A few years ago, I was reading NOW Magazine, Toronto’s free weekly newspaper (check it out), and saw its highly coveted 5N rating for a restaurant. “What is this place?” I asked myself… And filed Hawker Bar into the ‘places I must go to’ category somewhere in my mind and forgot about it.

I probably now go at least once a month; for drinks, dinner, or a quick snack. The food is classified as ‘Singaporean street food,’ but whatever that means, it’s fantastic and seems super authentic. The Chicken Wings and Chili Salt Tofu are to die for and they have specials on the menu like a whole fried fish and occasionally even items like sting-ray.

Soon enough everyone I knew was talking about this place and it became quite a thing at one point. Every time I go in I’m always seeing some local musician and once even saw Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) from the Matrix. Since then, I’ve seen Hawker Bar highly tooted almost everywhere. Recently even National Geographic has gotten on board, and if that isn’t super legit, I just don’t know…
