We’ve all rummaged through a dusty attic at some point in our lives, right? Maybe scavenged yard sales on a Sunday morning? Well my vintage and antiquity-thirsty friends, welcome to Ransack the Universe — hands down my favourite place to search for diamonds in the rough in Toronto when it comes to antiques, knick knacks and everything ridiculous you didn’t know you needed. The storefront can easily be identified when approaching it on Bloor Street between Lansdowne Avenue and Dufferin Street, as the contents of the store usually spill out of the entrance and onto the sidewalk outside. Vintage crates, old soda bottles, a corn-shaped teapot, vintage glassware, and a book titled “The Art of Making Sandwiches” are some of the oddities that I’ve come across.
The shop is a bit overwhelming at first, but that is part of its charm. With two jam-packed floors, I always manage to emerge with at least one new treasure. The owner of the shop also updates their Instagram daily with some of their most unique finds, and responds to inquiries very quickly. Having frequented many junk shops around the city, this is by far my favourite. I suggest calling before heading out since their hours can vary from what is listed.
Ransack the Universe is one of quite a few vintage shops along this stretch of Bloordale, so if you’re planning on visiting this gem – maybe make a day out of it and go on a vintage crawl!
