A round square in between several buildings, almost hidden away from most people visiting the city centre. That would be a perfect description of Plaza Redonda, but there are a few more facts to discover here, so keep reading.
First, its construction history. It was designed and built by a Valencian architect named Salvador Escrig in 1840, and it was originally used as a fish/meat market. No motor vehicles are permitted to pass through it, and it is the only square in Valencia that is completely enclosed by buildings. You could even pass by without knowing of its existence. Three-story buildings are flanking it, all residential; the lower levels have always been commercial, and nowadays, they are mostly clothing shops.
It is a 5-minute walk from Plaza La Reina; get into the El Mercat neighbourhood, and you will stumble upon it. Bars and restaurants overlook the square, and you can get to them by walking through the small and beautiful streets of Ciutat Vella district. Inside, you will find small stalls selling mostly arts and crafts and a fountain in the very middle.
Plan your visit according to the commercial opening hours, weekdays from 10:30- 14:00 and 17:00 to 20:00 / weekends from 11:00 to 14:30h. You will miss the interior ambience of the plaza if you are not prepared.

One of my fondest memories of the city during summer is sitting by their giant-red-plastic cone and cooling down while having a delicious treat.
