The Fondway Café is a peaceful oasis in the midst of one of the busiest parts of Burnaby – Metrotown. Tucked underneath an apartment building across from Metrotown skytrain station, this hidden gem is where I like to go to get a snack, or to just take a break from the chaos outside.
Inside, the café is deceptively large, with high ceilings, large windows and cute muraled white walls. 64 different types of tea line one wall and accessories such as old suitcases, baskets, and art books adorn the corners of the café. There is a variety of seating, from soft comfortable seats at the back, to a long communal table and 3 smaller tables with stools.
The café serves an astonishing amount of items – from a vast variety of tea and Umbria coffee, to smoothies, bubble tea, sandwiches, waffles, pastries and cakes. Most menu items are typical café fare revamped with an Asian flair, a change that for the most part improves the food. My favourite items are the turkey sandwich, chicken sandwich, any of the pastries and the mocha slush; all a little different and lots delicious.
So, if you need a break from wandering Metrotown, or a place to relax before your late night movie starts, go to the Fondway.
