I stumbled upon this gem on the first day of my new job in Kitsilano, and I’ve been going regularly ever since. The first thing I noticed when walking into Olive + Ruby was the decor: a floor-to-ceiling mural on one wall and another entire wall devoted entirely to potted plants. Pair these with the bright, south-facing windows, and it creates a pleasing, relaxing space to sip coffee or munch on avocado toast, both lovingly prepared by their amazing, friendly staff.
A big draw for me are the smoothies. They’ve got fruity ones with healthy, fresh ingredients, but my favourite is the Mint Chip, with cashews, bananas, cocoa and fresh mint. It’s delicious and not overly sweet – perfect when you need something sweet in the afternoon at work.
With smoothie in hand, you can lounge in one of their hanging basket chairs and people-watch for as long as you like. It’s really a quintessential Kitsilano experience, made all the better because Olive + Ruby is active in the community and in supporting local artists and designers. Everything from the hand-crafted pottery mugs to pop-up fashion shows have made this trendy cafe a hot spot with locals and students, so I recommend coming earlier before the afternoon rush.
