If you want to see alternative, inspirational and transformative pieces of theatre art, the Cultch is the place to go.
The Cultch is entrenched in Vancouver history- the Historic Theatre is a 106-year-old church converted into a performing space, an art gallery and two licensed lounges. In the last few years the company has expanded to host shows in another iconic Vancouver landmark, the York Theatre, which is a few blocks away on Commercial Street.
The types of performance you can see at both locations include theatre, dance, spoken word and musicians that range from bands to orchestras to soloists. Every year it has a large program with performances that are silly, heartfelt, and tragic, and that often incorporate historic elements, psychological comments or dialogues about current events. Both theatres host groundbreaking performances that test the limits of stage space and performer-audience interactions.
