It is not easy to define what the Serra dei Giardini is. Is it a greenhouse? A bar? A laboratory? A place for concerts? The nice thing is that the Serra is all that and more!
Located close to Giardini della Biennale, the Serra (or, in English “the greenhouse”) was built in 1894 with the aim to accommodate decorative plants used for the International Art Exhibition. Since 2010, the Serra is run by a social cooperative that has been able to revitalize the space with numerous activities that enabled the Venetians to regain possession of this beautiful place.
I personally find the Serra a very cozy and relaxing place, perfect for a sunny afternoon to spend with friends. In autumn and winter you can enjoy the light and warmth of an authentic greenhouse. I love how the light fills and colors the spaces and how the plants supply a relaxing atmosphere. I enjoy seeing how local residents come and go to shop for flowers or to drink something in such an amicable way.
If you are not in a rush, in the cafeteria of the Serra you can have snacks, juices, coffee, hot tea and organic products, but don’t expect to have a full meal or a quick service; better to enjoy cultural and educational activities, musical and theatrical events.
Now you can even ask for a picnic basket and enjoy the sun on the garden, a great chill out time especially after exploring the Art Biennale!
