Do you want to dive deep into the Viennese bathing and sauna culture? In the middle of Vienna’s workers district, the 10th district or “Favoriten” as it is called, you can find the impressive ‘Amalienbad” building which looks a bit like a fortress from the outside. Inside: this is where we locals let our garments drop. As the Viennese like nude bathing!! Wrinkled, skinny, chubby or in shape –  at this place all folks meet and they don’t care about their looks!!

And there is also a very old “tradition” – for those who have simple old apartments with no shower inside: the so-called “Brausebad”! The chance to wash yourself for very little money in either a tub or in a shower. So sometimes you’ll see older people getting ready in a public bath!

If you are a swimmer: there is a beautiful swimming hall as some parts of the building from the 1920’s still show some elegant interior in the Art Deco style.

Though for my taste maybe the prettiest part is the neat and small octagon shaped bath in the sauna area. The only letdown is that there are a lot of regular visitors who take all deck chairs beside it…But beware: The entire sauna is a naked area and therefore it is not allowed to enter with swimwear. If you are shy: at certain times the sauna areas are separated by gender…check out the website or ask the cashier. It is worth to see Vienna unveiled!
