Here are my favorites of the many Christmas markets in Vienna.
Firstly, Corona has not yet loosened its grip on regulations. At the moment, the markets are ‘on hold’ due to lockdown but supposed to open up on December 1 or 7 – let’s see. You find me hopeful; therefore here my go-to spots, in case small outdoor gatherings will be allowed again.
We call x-mas markets “Christkindlmarkt” and there is no entrance fee to any of them.
#1 Art Advent at Karlsplatz (above picture)
is not only special for its romantic and kid-friendly (play area on straw and petting zoo in the center) setting, but also for its craft goods one can purchase after one or two “Glühwein” (mulled wine) or “Punsch” – food and drinks at the Art Advent market are organic.
Tucked away in tiny hilly alleys up the Spittelberg, this is a true gem I’ve enjoyed going to ever since. It might get crowded on weekends, but this way you won’t feel so cold. Make sure to check out the lovely courtyard of Amerlingbeisl!
#3 Weihnachtsdorf at university campus Altes AKH
I used to study at this quiet campus site, which used to be a hospital (Vienna is a student city with many universities, and their departments are spread out all over the city) and still like to go back.
Not letting you down on the touristy, overcrowded, and overpriced famous market: Christmas Dream in front of the, admittedly, beautiful city hall is the biggest of all.
