This is not like any ordinary cinema – here you’ll step into the very heart of the history of moving pictures!

Located in the grand Albertina building behind Vienna’s State Opera this Cinémathèque shows monthly retrospectives for the dedicated movie lover! All movies are shown in the original language, sometimes with English or German subtitles. There is a great monthly booklet for the program with detailed (German) descriptions of the movie and an insight about the work and style of the director. So if you are in Vienna you can dive into British movies of the late 60’s, real Eighties movies from the US and movies from Japanese, Italian or German directors you’ve probably never heard of if you are not a film art student, but which are still worth watching!

There’s a nice narrow bar area where you can have a drink before the film starts or discuss the content afterwards. A special place! Maybe no wonder that filmmaker Martin Scorsese decided to serve as Honorary President or that sometimes Michael Haneke drops by!
