Stadionbad – Dive in on a cloudy day

Are you into serious swimming? If so, then try this out! Yes, I know, it is one of the biggest public swimming pools in Vienna… And on hot days it can fill up with up to 8,000 people – what a frightening idea to squeeze yourself into crowded water!

But I really like this huge public bath with its many pools on slightly colder summer days. Then it might be possible that you end up sharing 7,822m³ of water – around 31,288 filled bathtubs – with nearly no one. As the water is heated to a temperature of around 26 degrees, I think it is perfect for swimming. On these days I put on my swimming gear and goggles, and watch with a jealous eye the few professional swimmers with their training in the 50m pool.

The grounds with huge lawns, big trees and old-fashioned buildings have their own very special charm. Not that you call it pretty, rather slightly  weird. I don’t fancy this public bath on a hot weekend day, but early morning on a cloudy day, one can enjoy the best swimming spot in Vienna. And you can treat yourself afterwards with a Viennese breakfast from the canteen/restaurant, watching the bored lifeguards.

Having no swimsuit in your backpack is no excuse- there is a shop where you can buy it and you can leave your valuables in lockers.

NB: might close earlier on days with bad weather. Only cash money, no credit cards or similar! Due to Corona, they limit the number of people.
