In 1924 the team of Lithuanian athletes participated, for the first time in history, in the Summer Olympic Games held in Paris, France. It consisted of the national football team of thirteen players and two cyclists.
The debut was not very successful since the Lithuanian football team lost the game to Switzerland 0-9 and the cyclists did not complete the 188 km long route due to technical problems.
The first Lithuanian athlete who became an Olympic champion was boxer Danas Pozniakas, who won Olympic gold in the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City. Since then Lithuania has had twenty five Olympic champions winning gold medals in various sports fields.
To honor these athletes the Vilnius municipality created the Alley of Olympic Fame in 2008. There are twenty five stands in the Alley each dedicated to a certain champion. It has a picture and a brief Olympic biography of the athlete. It is a very good place to take a stroll and to learn about Lithuanian Olympic history.
